Declining the playwright's request that he attempt to persuade the actress Elizabeth Robins to waive her acting rights to the role of Hedda Gabler in favor of another actress chosen to play the part in a revival planned by Messrs. Vedrenne & Barker ("She had expressed her willingness to waive her rights in favor of any actress but one; but this happened to be precisely the actress to whom Messrs. Vedrenne & Barker proposed to entrust the part; & as these gentlemen had shown no consideration for her, I presume she does not feel inclined to show consideration for them ... Had they offered Miss Robins the part & she had declined it I might have felt justified in representing to her, on your behalf, that her position was unreasonable. But as it is I so far sympathize with her that I fear I cannot take any steps in the matter.").
