Noting that Donne's allusion in a recent lecture to the appearance of the first hansom cab called to mind "a few lines I wrote on the occasion", with the body of the letter followed by five holograph stanzas from a humorous poem previously published by Ainger on the subject of "The first appearance of the real hansom cab at Drury Lane Theatre".
