Likely year of writing from the contents of this letter and the one that follows (MA 9868.5) which appear to be discussing the solicitation of signatures for the Address to Dr. James Martineau which was held on April 21, 1888 in celebration of his 83rd birthday.

Summary: 

Enclosing "...a sheet, written on in the way you suggest, which I hope will serve the purpose;" thanking him for sending him "The Scotsman"; adding "Sometime or other, I hope to send you something - perhaps in the shape of a sonnet - which possibly will do to go with my signature;" sending his regards to Mrs. Knight and reminding him of his promise to come to Oxford.
