There were two questionnaires sent to authors, one of 39 questions related to the work of American writers only and restricted to their work in the five years preceding 1970, and a 2nd questionnaire of 4 questions that asked about the author's own current and future work. The longer questionnaire also asked questions related to literary criticism and literary publications. It appears that the shorter questionnaire was sent in the Spring of 1969 and the longer one sent on April 1, 1970.
