Washington's monument, February, 1885 : autograph manuscript drafts of the poem, [ca. 1885].

A sheet of Washington's writing paper with his watermark, part of the accompanying material of MA 931, removed and cataloged separately (see MA 6435.2).
The published poem begins, "Ah, not this marble, dead and cold."
These manuscript drafts were acquired by Pierpont Morgan in two separate transactions: MA 627, a single sheet written in pen with some pencil corrections; and MA 931, three sheets incorporating at least two additional drafts of the poem, including one written partially on the verso on an envelope postmarked 1885 Feb. 18. The accompanying material was acquired with MA 931.
