Quires a and b are found in two entirely different settings, the second composed and printed later in the run to account for an increase in the number of copies, as described by C.F. Bühler in "The two issues of the first edition of the Manipulus florum", in Gutenberg Jahrbuch 1953, pages 69-72. The first setting, designated B by Bühler, is exemplified by the Brown University, Annmary Brown Memorial and other copies; while the second setting, designated A, is exemplified by the British Museum and other copies (including the digitized Bayerische Staatsbibliothek copy). To Bühler's list of diagnostic variants may be added, at the end of the fifth printed line of the book, "post", spelled out, in the first setting (B), versus "p" with a mark of abbreviation in the second setting (A), as transcribed in the British Museum catalogue description. There are no other variant quires in the book, which indicates a variation in state, rather than issue; Bühler does not address the possibility that a few copies might contain mixed first/second or second/first pairs.
